I learned about the recovery comunities, through a friend that was a recovering alcoholic.
When my friend was upsetting himself because of his brilliance and sensitivity, he would come to see me. We would have far ranging talks about spirituality and everything else of importance to him. After a while he would leave in peace.
One day he told me that I was his sponsor. I asked him what a sponsor was, since I thought I was just his open and honest friend that had and was having spiritual experiences and shared them. He explained about AA and invited me along to some of his meetings. There I got to know of the wisdom learned the hard way by the AA community. It was the same wisdom I had learned other hard ways as a part of my spiritual rebirth and recovery.
Since I now was a friend of a recovering alcoholic, I began going to the noon AlAnon meetings at work. I again discovered the wisdom learned the hard way by the AlAnon community. It was the same wisdom I had learned other hard ways as a part of my spiritual rebirth and recovery.
I discovered that a sponsor is just a friend, that is open and honest about their own spiritual experiences. The same as a wellness coach.
I discovered that the best kept secret of the recovery process is to find a sponsor, that is futher along and to learn from them.
I also discovered that it is important to get beyond the first stages of repeating things like "I am an alcoholic." or "I am a co-dependent enabler." and get on to "I am a recovering wounded human being" and "I am a recovered child of God".
