1 June 98 [DSM 299.00]
Today I am starting to go through the American Psychiatric Association's
Desk Reference to the Diagnostic Criteria from DSM-III-R. DSM IV is
out, but the differences between III and IV have little to do with what I
am sharing.
I am sharing a new way to look at mental illnesses and symptoms.
One of the first illnesses in this book is "Autistic Disorder". The
gestalt I get is that these people are "Attention Challenged". We all
have degrees of attention challenge, from very little to Attention Deficit
Disorder to Autistic Disorder. In fact, you could find in Helen Palmer's
work on the Enneagram, our personalities are defined by how we place
our "Attention". The degree of our disorder is determined by how stuck
we are in that attention. Autistic is just an extreme example of this
stuckness.
It is significant how the parents in the book "Son Rise" helped their
autistic child to come out of his world and into their world. They
joined him in his world until he could find his way to their world.
Simple, but difficult to do. It took a lot of time, love and devotion
for the miracle to finally take place.
They are just stuck in more attention in their mind than their
body in extreme ways.
2 June 98 [DSM 315.00-39]
The next group of disorders in the DSM is intellectual disorders.
This is where we do not have a talent for math, writing, reading,
speaking and listening. Actually, most of us have a challenge in
listening to others.
So, some of us have worse wounds in the areas of intellectual
talent. I know that some with these particular wounds have found
a closer walk with God and have already found their blessing in
disguise. Even the autistic may be closer to God and not able to
tell us.
What to do? The same things as with any other psychic and or
physical wound. Cooperate with the natural healing processes
that happen to be spiritual healing processes. Those are the ones
I have been writing about here for two years now...
They are just temporarily stuck in the body more than the mind.
3 Jun 98 [DSM 315.40]
"Development Coordination Disorder" is the next item in the DSM.
This is lower motor coordination than average for the age of maturity.
I had some of that from my birth wounds. I could not dance until I
learned how to dance with the spirit of my lord most high within.
We do not judge babies as having this disorder because we know
they have a development schedule and that their schedules vary. We
sometimes judge older people when we do not know what their
development schedule is.
We sometimes judge others or ourselves as behind schedule
both mentally and physically. Since we do not really know our
schedule or the schedules of others and only God knows the
schedules, how did we get the arrogance to judge? We simply
did not know better. Another opportunity to forgive ourselves.
They are just temporarily stuck in more attention in their mind
than their body.
4 May 98 [DSM 314.01]
"Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder". ADHD.
The one with ants in their pants. Has some characteristics
of mania in manic depressive. Common for many children to
have more energy than adults can be comfortable around.
We all have degrees of any of these symptoms. This is only
a challenge when our symptoms interfere with the enjoyment
of our lives.
Some children are taught to fight their symptoms
and this increases the strength of them and their symptoms.
From a spiritual growth point of view they need to both resist
and give in to their symptoms. There are times that we can
all practice keeping our attention on our task. It is valuable
to extend the time we can keep our attention on a task. There
are also times that we can practice letting our attention go where
it is going and to practice going with our attention. Both are
practical spiritual skills that are needed in living a better
ordinary life. They are temporarily stuck in the attention pattern
of a hungry hunter.
5 May 98 [DSM 312?]
"Conduct Disorder" is a fancy name for criminal behaviour.
Actually that is a fancy name for angry behaviour. The DSM
number may be 312 and may be just an editorial slip in my edition.
The examples they give are stealing in stealth, running away, lying,
fire-setting, staying away from school, breaking and entering,
destroying property, hurting animals, forcing sex, fighting with
a weapon, starting fights, stealing with confrontation, physically
hurting people. Angry, right?
In all cases they have something different from what they
want and are taking action to get what they want. In effect
they are doing to others what they really want done to them.
When they learn how to love themselves they will not need to
do these things. When they learn how to forgive themselves
they will not need to do these things. They have compulsions
to do negative things. Others have compulsions to do rituals
to avoid negative things. Compulsions are compulsions. They
are trapped in their negative cycles until they learn how to get
unstuck by new generic spiritual skills. Their attention is stuck
on negative behaviour for a while or a life...
6 Jun 98 [313.81]
"Oppositional Defiant Disorder" = Angry, Arguing, Defiant,
Annoying, Blaming, Easily Annoyed, Resentful, Vindictive,
Swearing. Of course these are all signs of anger. These are
again all signs of differences between what is and what is wanted.
They are playing the opposition so it is easier to see their anger.
When they push it is natural for others to push back. It is beyond
natural to join them and then lead them back to reality.
The solutions for them are all the solutions for anger that I have
written here for over two years. The solutions for those that live
around them are all the solutions that I have written about here for
over two years. Those are what I am still learning and learning to
use.
7 Jun 98 [309.21]
"Separation Anxiety Disorder" Young co-dependent.
Excessive fear of being separated from Mother or caregiver.
Again a difference between what is perceived and what is.
The issue can be a metaphor of perceived separation from
God. Again all of the generic spiritual skills to join with God
are the remedy.

I started my daily page, because it is useful for me to look for some recovery tip or secret each day for my spiritual growth. we and I only need one secret to work on and let it work on me each day. They are secrets because they are usually the opposite of what the majority of society teaches. They must be secret because they are not commonly used. A friend of mine once said "Common Sense is not much in Common.". Now that I have grandchildren I am also writing for them. I would have really liked for my grandparents to have passed on what they learned.
I am including Sunday as it is my formal day of learning the lord most high's secrets. If you would like ask questions, or contribute some of your wisdom, or want to make some comments or want to vote for which day to put on my tip of the month page or tell your success stories, click Michael Foster, M.
